Perspetiva

Santarém leads activity as fire risk rises in Faro

The highest concentration of fires was in the Santarém district, which accounted for the bulk of the day's ignitions. In the Setúbal district, Palmela stood out with multiple occurrences, and a single reignition was recorded in Monchique, Faro district. Compared with the previous day, overall activity was markedly lower, indicating a calmer rhythm. The response featured a considerable ground effort and no aerial support.

The MTG satellite layer showed a sizable set of thermal anomalies that did not match any active incidents, implying many stem from agricultural burns or industrial sources typical for this period. FIRMS detections displayed a comparable pattern, with no matches to reported fires. Sentinel‑2 did not reveal any new burn scars. This picture suggests that, despite the reduced activity, satellite monitoring continues to pick up external thermal sources, underscoring the need to watch the rising risk in Faro district today.

Technical discussion

Rural fire‑risk bulletins show a general upward trend nationwide, with the Faro district singled out for an increasing risk. Risk levels in the other districts remain flat. The MTG asymmetry, characterised by numerous unmatched thermal anomalies, points to external sources beyond the active fire set. Operationally, the ground response was strong and no aerial assets were deployed.

Outlook

Fire risk remains on the rise in the Faro district, within a national upward trend. Monitoring should be sustained throughout the day.
